A grim milestone: 100 days since Hamas’ Oct. 7 invasion of Israel

The invasion of Hamas in Israel, initiated a war in Gaza. the way how Israel took revenge caused a global convulsion of antisemitism, political sparring about the future and, last week, genocide charges against Israel in an international court.

One can say that Hamas’ Oct. 7 invasion of Israel was a seismic moment in Israeli and Jewish history: Hamas terrorists killed approximately 1,200 people that day, mostly civilians, took hostages and wounded thousands — making it the bloodiest day in Israeli history and the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel invaded Gaza, aiming to depose Hamas. So far, more than 185 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the invasion, nothing compared how many innocent civilians the Israeli soldiers killed.

23,357 Palestinians killed since Oct. 7, as of Jan. 10. Israel’s counteroffensive in Gaza, launched in the days after Oct. 7, has devastated the coastal enclave. The casualty figure, provided by the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, covers both combatants and civilians, including thousands of children. Tens of thousands more have been injured.

The casualty figure — far higher than that of any previous Israel-Hamas conflict — has driven global calls by international bodies and (left-wing) activists for a ceasefire. The Israeli government has no regard at all for the International comments on how to drastically deal with Gaza and give citizens few opportunities to survive in this bloody and devastating battle.

Israel has rebuffed those calls and maintains that it makes extensive efforts to safeguard civilian life. It blames Hamas for putting noncombatants in harm’s way.

Israel believes it has the right to shoot at hospitals and schools because they believe Hamas fighters would be hiding there. According to them, the fact that so many civilian deaths are the fault of Hamas, not theirs.

For the Israeli government, there is now only one option, to completely get rid of the “Hamas terrorist movement”. Several times Netanyahu said he will not stop until Hamas has completely disappeared from the map. He seems to forget or not to tell us how he will deal with Hamas members in Jordan, Lebanon and other Eastern countries.

Because of Israel’s horrific attitude, many of us in Western Europe dare not show outward signs of our Jewishness in public, as we receive too many negative reactions. Unfortunately, we also have to establish that many people have adopted the slogan of the Hamas fighters “From the River to the Sea Palestine Will be Free”, without actually knowing the real content of that song. Because of this, they give the impression that they also want the complete extermination of the Jewish race.
The chanting of that slogan by a singers and members of the audience at the opening celebration in Mechelen, of the Presidency of the Council of Europe was a profound disturbance of that party, but also a clear sign on the wall that many here in Belgium do not realize the content of that song.
