Bereshith 5: Adam’s Descendants to Noah #4 From Enosh to another Enoch

Seth died at the age of 912 when his son Enosh was 105 years old. At that time Enosh his son Kenan was 15 years old. He got that son when he was 90 years old.

And Enos lived ninety years, and begat Kayinan: And Enos lived after he begat Kayinan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.
(Gen 5:9-11 IAV)

From all those previous people you might notice that the total length of their lives — which we could have figured out by addition — is specifically given: to make clear that they all died peacefully, before the Flood. We also know that they came to call upon Jehovah God with the knowledge that His Name should be set apart or made holy.

And to Shet, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of YY .
(Gen 4:26 IAV)

When Cainan or Kayinan [Kenan or Chenaanah, (Kenaanah) = broken in pieces] had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. We do not know why Cainan or Kenan received that name, saying he was or would be broken to pieces, having suffered a lot for what had overcome his family. Noticing he too had a long life, we may more assume he would have lived righteously, like his forefathers and would have had a normal life with its ups and downs.

Mahalalel with his brothers and sisters, had the pleasure to have their father for 840 years. Cainan (Kayinan/Kenan) came to face death when he was 910 years old.

And Kayinan lived seventy years and begat Mahalaleel: And Kayinan lived after he begat Mahalaleel eight hundred and forty years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Kayinan were nine hundred and ten years: and he died.
(Gen 5:12-14 IAV)

And Mahalaleel lived sixty and five years, and begat Yered: And Mahalaleel lived after he begat Yered eight hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Mahalaleel were eight hundred ninety and five years: and he died.
(Gen 5:15-17 IAV)

Mahalalel’s son Jared got a son with the same name as the son of Cain, who builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch or Hanokh.

And Kayin knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Hanokh: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Hanokh.
(Gen 4:17 IAV)

The Hanokh here now may also not be confused with the grandson of Abraham by Keturah, nor with one of the sons of Midan or with the first son of Reuben.

The Hanock or Enoch in this part of the family tree is the father of Methuselah and the writer of a number of pseudepigraphic writings (the Books of Enoch).

The man spoken of here is the son of Jared of the godly line of Seth, dedicated for holiness, being of the seventh generation.  At first it seems that man before Methuselah’s birth, was in hot pursuit of sex, which shortens life. Note that all the men in this chapter who had their first child at a younger age than Adam had Seth live shorter lives than he, and vice versa. The fact that the relationships are not mathematically precise is because such general rules also depend on the nature of the individual person {Abarbanel}. Note also that those number of days and years are in solar years.

Enoch was the type who could easily have been swayed to do evil. So the Holy One removed him, (bringing him to death) before his time. Then he was no more. He was no more on earth to fill out the number of his days. For God took him. Before his time. Compare

“O mortal, I am about to take away the delight of your eyes from you through pestilence” (Ezekiel 24:16).

And Yered lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Hanokh: And Yered lived after he begat Hanokh eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Yered were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died. And Hanokh lived sixty and five years, and begat Methuselah: And Hanokh walked with Elohim after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Hanokh were three hundred sixty and five years: And Hanokh walked with Elohim: and he was not; for Elohim took him.
(Gen 5:18-24 IAV)
