Netanyahu says Israel is at war after Hamas launches multi-front assault

Financial Times , October 7, 2023

Event

Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that Israel was “at war” after Hamas launched its biggest attack on the country in years, firing a barrage of rockets and sending militants across the border from the Gaza Strip.

In a televised address as Palestinian militants waged gun battles with Israeli forces in multiple locations in southern Israel, the prime minister said he had ordered

“an extensive mobilisation of reserves”

and that Israel would

“return fire of a magnitude that the enemy has not known”.

“The enemy will pay an unprecedented price,”

he added. The escalation is the most serious bout of violence since Israel and Hamas fought an 11-day war in 2021. It follows weeks of tensions on the border of Gaza, which has been blockaded by Israel and Egypt since Hamas took control of the territory in 2007. The attack, which took place on the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah and appeared to catch the military off-guard, also poses a serious challenge for Netanyahu’s far-right government, which came to power last year with hardliners in important posts pledging to bolster Israeli security.

Comment

On the 6th October 1973 (on the Hebrew day of Atonement, Yom Kippur) the Arab nations around Israel launched a surprise attack to try to destroy Israel. Precisely 50 years later on 7th October 2023, Hamas have launched a surprise attack on Israel with the same aim. They are calling for all enemies of Israel to unite against the Jews to bring the nation of Israel to an end. Just as in 1973 this attack seems to have not been expected and it took over 3 hours for Netanyahu to make a statement. Hundreds of Israeli’s are injured and many killed already and some taken hostage.

The Bible says in Psalm 83 that Israel’s enemies will make a tumult. Tumult in Hebrew is the word Hamas.

Bible Quote

For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head. They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and consulted against thy hidden ones.  They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. (Psalm 83:2-4)
